Muhurat trading

The ceremonial Diwali session that opens the Samvat year on NSE and BSE — what it is, and what the data actually shows about it.

What the data can and cannot say

Muhurat trading happens once a year. Twenty years of history is therefore twenty observations, which is below the threshold this platform requires before it will weight anything. Any claim about how the session "usually" behaves is working from a sample too small to separate a real effect from chance, and the workbench says so rather than quoting an average.

That is the honest answer, and it is a different answer from the one most coverage of the session gives.

Muhurat trading questions

What is muhurat trading?

A ceremonial one-hour trading session held by NSE and BSE on Diwali, marking the start of Samvat, the Hindu accounting year. It is a full session: trades settle normally.

When is it?

On Diwali, at a time the exchanges announce each year — usually in the evening. It is not at a fixed clock time, so the exchange circular is the only authority.

Is it a good time to buy?

The session is traditionally considered auspicious, and it is heavily covered in the press. Whether it has any measurable effect on returns is a question the workbench will answer from data rather than tradition, with the sample size attached — and one session a year makes for a very small sample.
